COMMON QUESTIONS

Good to know.

How early can I review my mortgage?

It is sensible to start several months before your deal ends. The best timing depends on your lender and offer validity.

Is switching lenders always cheaper?

Not always. A new deal can involve arrangement, valuation, legal or early repayment fees, so compare overall costs.

MAKE AN INFORMED NEXT STEP

Compare the total cost over a relevant period

Compare your existing lender’s product transfer with a new mortgage, including product fees, legal and valuation costs, cashback and any early repayment charge. Adding a fee to the balance can mean paying interest on that fee. A lower monthly payment achieved by extending the term can increase total interest.

Keep extra borrowing tied to its purpose

If you want to fund improvements, obtain quotes and consider the repayment period. If the purpose is debt consolidation, reducing the monthly payment can increase the overall cost and turn unsecured borrowing into debt secured on your home; discuss the risks and alternatives before proceeding.
